Truckers strike, foreclosures, crude oil and gasoline prices a combination for disaster. by Gwen Caldwell

In a time when foreclosures are up 60%, according to AAA website, gasoline has hit new highs overnight at 3.267 a gallon, crude oil at $110.00 a barrel, middle class Americans are having to shop at their local food banks to feed their families, small businesses are closing , unemployment is up and the GNP was .06 for the last quarter, consumer confidence is at an all time low and now the whispers of a truckers strike have been confirmed. Bleak to say the very least! Frankly, before it's all said and done, I think the Depression Era will probably look like a tea party in comparison. Â
We've become soft and lazy, we don't grow our own food, we don't preserve food and we're preoccupied with unimportant distractions. We don't sew and knit, we eat fast food or cook from a box. We take too many things for granted. We waste and plunder. We don't take responsibility for our own health care and preventative medicine. We not only allow, but encourage our youth to pacify themselves with games, TV and computers. They don't have critical or creative reasoning skills. What kind of a future and example are we preparing our children and grandchildren for? What legacy do we leave them?   The Patriot in me wants to cheerlead for every trucker that has the courage to shut their rig down, to make a statement. I want to applaud them for their willingness to forfeit their income to have all our silent voices heard. The side of me that has joined the ranks of the poverty stricken wants to scream., because the reality is that by the time I make enough money to go grocery shopping, the shelves may very well be empty. However, I know that I am among those who know how to survive with little and make the most of what's available. It's those who have resources that I pity. The wake up call may very well be for them…no matter how much money they have, if there is nothing on the shelves to buy, what can their money buy for them? Even being able to dine out requires regular food deliveries, made by truckers that are going on strike.
No one is immune from the effects of our economy and the poor leadership of this country. We will all suffer varying degrees of this recession. Are our communities ready for the inevitable? Are we prepared? Can we stand and make the necessary sacrifices? Are we still American enough to stand up and say enough is enough?! Â
