Giuliani Advocates Blowing Smoke While Ignoring Blowback

According to an AP article Rudy Giuliani said, "The reputation of the United States has suffered globally not so much because of arrogant actions but for lack of salesmanship about benefits of democracy."

When I saw an Associated Press article today stating that Rudy Giuliani thinks the U.S. isn't suffering in its global relations because of its arrogant foreign policy but rather because we haven't sold democracy well enough, I almost threw up. How can this guy be so naive?

First of all, the notion that the world hasn't been oversold on the benefits of democracy so far shows that Giuliani has no clue about the knowledge, attitudes, history and beliefs of people in other countries regarding democracy. Second, it shows that he has no intention of discontinuing America's policy of interference in other countries, which continues to piss people off around the world and is the truest form of isolationism. Third, Giuliani's comments prove beyond doubt that he appreciates neither the difference between liberty and democracy, nor the fact that it was liberty that made this country great, not democracy. Democracy, more often than not, divides us and creates unnecessary contention. By nearly all accounts, democracy causes as many problems (or more) as it solves. But liberty is what makes us great. The American Dream isn't about voting for politicians. It's about being free to pursue your own dreams. That's liberty, not democracy.

Giuliani's comments make it clear just how beneficial this week's grassroots fundraising effort for the Ron Paul campaign truly is. The fundraiser is called the Rudy's Reading List money bomb-let, and it couldn't be timed better. It wasn't intended to be a major money bomb. That honor goes to the one scheduled for December 16th, the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. But given the ignorance of Rudy's latest quip, I'd like to see more emphasis being placed on the Rudy's Reading List fundraiser.

Right now, there are about 1,800 people who have signed up for that fundraiser. This pales in comparison to the more than 20,000 who have signed up for the tea party fundraiser. With only four days to go, the Rudy's Reading List fundraiser doesn't have a lot of time left to push for participation. Maybe Giuliani's comments will help change that.
