The quote by Hank Reardon in Atlas Shrugged proves true today. Ron Paul working in the Republican Party does not work. Neither would Ron Paul in the Libertarian Party.

In fact, the entire process of electing candidates for President is irrational. Different states get to express their preferences first. Some states may get a mulligan so that the Democratic Party can attempt to get the candidate the higher ups set the plan for to begin with.

I have written here about the farce called the Republican Nomination Process. Party leaders calling for an end to campaigns to annoit John McCain their man. I have written about all the voters who cast votes early in primaries only to have their candidate withdraw.

Is there anything rational about what you have seen this year? Absolutely not. Is this election cycle different than previous election cycles? Only the fact that we are seeing it for what it truly is...that is the difference.

Ron Paul makes sense in the Republican Party? How? They do not want him. They did not stick up for him when Fox banned him from the debate. They minimized his camera time during the debate and gave him questions that were obviously meant to sabotage his appearances.

Ron Paul makes sense in the Libertarian Party? How? The Libertarians spend all of their funds getting signatures to get on the ballot. There is no time to even consider Paul as a possible candidate despite his name recognition.

As Hank Reardon prepares for his exit from playing the game within the parameters set by those in control, he makes the statement "There is no way to make the irrational work".

That is what we are up against. This entire process is irrational. The whole idea of one person one vote sounds good at first. Until you realize that so many of those voting are using that vote to take what is rightfully yours. What sort of rational system is that? It isn't.

Even the fight over showing ID to vote has been a battle in many states. How rational is it that I have to show ID to the same guy that serves me beer every week because it is the law, yet we have lawsuit after lawsuit challenging the idea that you should be required to prove who you are before you vote. Irrational in my eyes.

Super delegates, limited debates, debates that are not debates, candidates who quit in the middle of the election process, when they could still win. One could go on and on with the irrational things we see with our process.

The Republicans have a candidate that is pro-censorship(McCain-Feingold), pro illegal immigrant (McCain-Kennedy) and it suppose to represent the majority of the party. Does that seem rational to you?

As Hank Reardon says, there is no way for this to work. It's time for change. I have advocated voting out every incumbent, but even that will not solve the problem. How do we return this system to a rational one? Unfortunately, I do not know.

There are many people upset with Ron Paul.  I am not sure that they should be.  Expecting a rational outcome out of an irrational system is what is driving so many of us towards insanity.  We have to accept that an irrational system will rarely produce rational results.

Amen! And I would add that an education system based on government propaganda and political correctness (irrationalities) will not produce critical thinkers capable of recognizing the irrational foundations of our current systems.

I think it's a good article but I don't think you presented enough of an argument to prove that "Ron Paul working in the Republican Party does not work. Neither would Ron Paul in the Libertarian Party". Has Ron Paul significantly changed or improved the Republican Party? I would say no, but perhaps the answer remains to be seen. In time, the Paul Republicans will answer this question. Has Ron Paul effectively used the Republican Party as a vehicle for Pauleolibertarianism? Yes. Would the Libertarian Party have been just as good a vehicle? I don't know. I would like to think so.

Nevertheless, if Ron Paul is not on the ballot in November then I also will vote Libertarian - as I have done for the past 28 years.

Mike Foster,

Good Comments.  I would ask you if anyone has significantly improved the Republican Party who ran for the nomination and loss?  Even more important have won the nomination and left the party stronger?

Did either Bush improve the party?  No.  Reagan?  Maybe.  Ford no, Nixon, No.

Now imagine if we had taken all the Paul money spent and used it towards local and statewide elections.  Imagine if Paul had decided to run for Congress as a Libertarian and invited others to join the fight.  That would have been a stronger step in the right direction rather than what we will have at the start of 2009.
