Ahh, the media.
Lawmakers of my state are fooling around with ways to make the road builders richer, but wisely seek to do so without upsetting the non-road builders here in this election year.
They know that only a gas-tax hike will fully fund the dreams of the contractors operating through their brothers-in-law in the state Department of Transportation.
They're spending most of their effort on creating a gas tax that doesn't look like a gas tax and -- if unfortunately outed as a gas tax -- can be blamed on the other party.
It's all mildly interesting and certainly decent fodder for a long libertarian opus about fighting locally, and, by golly, I had one ready to write down for all you good freedom lovers, but our largest newspaper has made that impossible.
A fellow just can't create a closely-reasoned column when choked with laughter. The proximate cause is this line from the paper's report of the debate:
"People who drive a lot use more fuel...".
Two points: That is reporter narrative, not a quotation from one of our crack representatives. The paper prides itself on having won multiple Pulitzer Prizes.
At least when we learned from the Chicago Tribune years ago that "Having people out of work causes unemployment," the Trib assured us that those were Mayor Daly's words.
