Doctor Who? is the title to a long-running British science fiction television series. Its main character is a human-looking alien who tries very hard to save the earth each week. He travels through time and space in something that looks like a tool shed. The good Doctor tries to save the world from outer space creatures--which want to enslave us, eat us, or simply exterminate us--by using his superior knowledge of history and science. His infectious optimism makes the viewer feel that most of us will be alright in the end.
We have a real Doctor running for president in the Republican Party this year. He's a ten-term Congressman and gynecologist from Texas. Instead of the sonic screwdriver, which is handy for picking locks and destroying computers, our Doctor uses a fragile piece of paper from another time called the U.S. Constitution. His superior knowledge, which may save the country, comes from his years of understanding Austrian economics.
The monsters in our world are of our own making. Generations of Americans have gotten intoxicated on easy money. We've relied on a strong military to solve our problems, instead of focusing on diplomacy and fair trade. Those elected to office have believed that more government was the solution, not realizing it was the problem. In the process, they have been sowing the seeds of our own destruction.
This week CNN has released recent polling data showing that Dr. Ron Paul is placing forth in New Hampshire at 8%, behind media darlings Mitt Romney (33%), John McCain (18%), and Rudy Giuliani (16%). Fred Thompson, TV's Arthur Branch in Law and Order, finished fifth at only 5%. At least in one state, Ron Paul is going from "who?" to "oh yeah, that guy." Stay tuned!
