John McCain, self labeled as The Reformer, hoping to weasel his way out of following his own co-authored law, stooped to attempting to pass the buck to Howard Dean, stating that he was only doing what others did in 2003.
"We're doing exactly what Howard Dean did in a previous election and what the FEC ruled in the case of Congressman Gephardt."
But that is not so. If John McCain was doing what Governor Dean and Congressman Gephardt did, he would have had to do it legally, by the rules.
Governor Dean and Congressman Gephardt followed the law and were granted written permission by the FEC to withdraw from the federal matching funds program.
To prove this, Howard Dean has produced and made available a copy of his letter that he received when he was granted approval something John McCain can not do.
Not only has he refused to get permission, he was warned by FEC Chairman David Mason that he can't unilaterally drop out of the program.
When The Democratic National Party filed its complaint yesterday, McCain's camp went into over-drive looking for escape routes.
VIEW POINT:
John McCain is abusing the system to keep his campaign afloat until he can raise more money from lobbyists.
Americans don't need or want another President that cheats, lies and or changes laws on a whim to suit their own needs.
