Obama, Clinton Debate: Nothing is Our Fault! To near nauseous emphasis both candidates clearly laid all blame on the President and none on their actions as Senators.by Gary Wood

It was not surprising to hear both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton lay blame on the Bush Administration for many of the challenges facing the United States today. What was surprising was the number of times both candidates, and especially Senator Clinton, emphasized it. There was one point where I lost track of the number of times in a two minute period Clinton used the term "Bush Administration" setting the clear tone of the remaining campaign strategy.
After Senator Clinton was asked if she felt Obama was not qualified to be Commander-in-Chief there was a rebuttal from Senator Obama in which he laid out several voting errors of his opponent regarding Iraq. He contrasted her judgment compared to his with an emphasis that he was right and she was wrong during a critical time when sound judgment mattered. Other than that neither alluded to any type of responsibility on the Congress and especially the Senate.
In this debate Obama seemed to be getting more comfortable with the format improving on his performances of the past. He effectively rebutted such allegations as plagiarism and being a candidate of all words and no action. In one single remark he was able to brush aside many of the "silly" aspects his opponent had been bringing up lately when he said, ""If we don't bring the country together, stop the endless bickering, actually focus on solutions and reduce that special interests that have dominated Washington ... we will not get anything done," Obama said. Yet who was the "we" he was referring to?
Charley Reese recently said, "Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them." Anyone watching tonight's debate would walk away with the understanding neither of these two Senators have helped to create any of the problems. Anything that was not specifically the President's fault was the Republican's fault. At the beginning Hillary Clinton once again stated that she "offers a lifetime of experience and proven results." In that lifetime, especially in her life as a U.S. Senator from New York how can she have any proven results while having no fault in any of the current, serious challenges facing this country? Truly, how can Senator Obama?
As President they, should one of them win the White House, will have to work with Congress. Our system of government requires the Legislative and Executive Branch to work together. One area they must work together is on the budget for the Federal Government. The President proposes the budget. Congress is responsible for setting fiscal policy. According to Senator Clinton tonight, "And I think that I will be very comfortable and effective in taking on Senator McCain over the fiscal irresponsibility of the Republican Party that he's been a part of." Clearly this indicates Senator McCain has some fault along with the President and the Republican Party. How long has Senator Clinton been a Senator? The past two years which party controlled the Senate? Yet she bears no responsibility nor any fault in the matter, only McCain and the Republicans. I hope this is not the strategy she will use in uniting the partisan divide.
In his response to a question regarding the ability of the Democratic Party to unite behind one of the two no matter who the nominee is Obama felt the party would and went on to say, "And I have no doubt that the Democratic Party at its best can summon a sense of common purpose again and higher purpose for the American people. And I think that the next nominee going into the November election is going to have a lot to talk about because the American people are tired of politics that is dominated by the powerful, by the connected."
For the past two years has the Democratically controlled Congress delivered on a common and higher purpose for the American people? Can Senators Obama or Clinton actually look the citizens of this country in the eye and boldly declare they are not a part of the powerful and connected who dominate politics? They can and do. However, we are not so easily fooled and both of these candidates should understand how much we understand there is plenty of blame for the President and the Republicans to bear and there is plenty of blame for the Democrats and the Congress to bear. To be clear, this includes both Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton. It is one thing to declare there is no fault based on your involvement, it is another thing to declare the truth.

Excellent link Dave, I hope those investing time in my article will also invest the time to read this as well. It starkly lays down a foundational difference between loving the U.S. for what it is while looking to a future of continued hope vs. loving the U.S. only for the future viewed by some vision of hope while ignoring all the great things we've accomplished and represent. Pride can be found in our past, present and future.
