Open GOP Revolt Over McCain GOP party leaders may like McCain - for whatever reason - but the conservative base obviously doesn't. The question is, therefore, how did he become the "front runner" in the first place?by Alex Wallenwein

It is clear by now that the GOP leadership wants McCain to be the party's leader - but conservatives aren't so happy with that choice. Maybe for the first time ever, true conservatives are in open rebellion against their party officials who, somehow, have pushed John "McAmnesty" Cain to the forefront of this year's nomination process.
It strains utter credulity to believe that rank and file Republican primary voters truly prefer the man who publicly stood against everything they believe in - with the possible exception of the war in Iraq - to any of the total of eleven candidates who stood on the stages of the numerous televised primary debates since early last year.
Other than maybe Michael Medved, there is not a single prominent conservative talk radio, TV, or Internet commentator who supports McCain. They all fervently oppose him.
Are we to believe that the full weight of the conservative opinion machine, the one that supposedly made the contract with America possible in1994 and that has led to the election of the same Bush twice in a rowhas become so utterly ineffective that Republican voters defect from their pronouncements in numbers sufficient to produce such a result?
And, why did Romney quit and then endorse McCain?
First of all, if anyone would have logically and reasonably given up at that point, it would have been Huckabee who had only about half the delegates Romney had at the time, and who has negligible financial support from his evangelical base in spite of the votes he was able to garner.
Secondly, why would Mitt Romney, who so bitterly opposed McCain during the debates on supposedly "conservative" grounds then turn around and endorse him if not for the sole purpose of sending the message to conservative voters that it is important to "rally" behind the ultimate nominee, no matter how liberal he is, just so the party can win in the fall?
Why is it that, when we know from repeated opinion polls (which were supported by repeated successful activist campaigns to defeat amnesty bills before Congress and which therefore do not leave any doubt as to their veracity and accuracy) that amnesty is utter anathema to American conservatives, why is it that we are presented with the most pro-amnesty GOP candidate as the supposed ultimate choice for the party's nominee?
It is understandable that the GOP rulers would proffer a pro-war candidate despite national opinion polls showing that nearly 70 percent of Americans oppose the war in Iraq - but a pro-Amnesty stooge? Come on!
Assuming that Republican primary voters (who usually are the more politically engaged party stalwarts) are not complete dimwits and nincompoops, it makes absolutely no sense to believe that the entire Republican base has drifted so far left that it would vote for McCain when it had so many far more conservative options available.
The only other reasonable conclusion a rational observe is able to draw from this is that the primary elections held so far were utterly compromised via the use of hackable voting machines and more than shady party-official shenanigans.
Or, how about the party's tactics in the Louisiana caucuses where Congressman Ron Paul appeared to win the most delegates. The following is from the Paul campaign web site:
"The Louisiana State GOP changed the rules at the eleventh hour to allow other candidates to file more delegates, even though there were plenty of delegates to compose full slates in each congressional district. At the time of the original January 10 deadline, Ron Paul had the largest number of delegates pledged to him. The party then changed the rules to give other candidates until January 12 to file more delegates."
The liberal press, of course, likes to pounce on the at least theoretical possibility that conservative opinion makers are losing the war of ideas in favor of more liberal notions of how the country should be run. The very thought of this, of course, will make any conservative voter bristle with contempt. They know what they believe in. They do not have to read it from a leftist party organ.
This open rebellion by the conservative base against the party's leadership has led to palpable results. A petition is currently being circulated that allows conservative voters to pledge they will "never vote for McCain".
It remains to be seen whether the eventual number of signatories to that pledge will outnumber the alleged number of votes McCain and the GOP claim he has received in the primaries so far. If it does, conservatives will know two things: (a) they can no longer trust their party officials, and (b) the party-controlled primary elections voting system is utterly nd hopelessly corrupted and cannot be trusted.
The remaining question is: Will American conservatives acquiesce to their party leaders' shenanigans - or will they toss them out on their heads and vote their conscience?
The future of the country surely depends upon it.

The GOP has lost it's way. As a long time Republican, if Ron Paul is not in the running in November, I will cast my vote for another party, or simply write in Ron Paul. I will not vote for John McCain. The GOP will not get any further support from me until they decide to choose a true conservative, and a Constitutional abiding candidate. My gut feeling is that the Republican party wants out of the this election cycle, and are touting McCain as their man because they know damn well he will be beaten by both Hillary and Obama. When 70 percent of the American public still want our troops home, and McCain wants to continue warmongering, he does not stand a chance against any dem in November 2008. The so-called Right wing media sources have their head so far up their arses, they can't even report on this election cycle properly, and yes, I am talking about the fauxnews and murdoch owned media sources.
I am going to laugh at the Repubs if they do not choose a nominee with some sense regarding our economy, it certainly is not McCain, he is a laughing stock when it comes to our economy, and illegals, and he is a very disliked individual, but the news media won't tell you much about that. I am furious about this election, but I will have the last laugh when the GOP that is currently in place is replaced with true conservatives the next election cycle. Our fight for Freedom, and Liberty will continue. The delegate count may be a big surprise to some of you Media sources and the GOP when the votes actually take place, watch, and see. We Ron Paul supporters will continue to educate people about our Constitution one at a time, and we will teach them what it really means to be a Patriot.
I have watched and listened to Ron Paul for 20 years in the House of Representatives. He understands our monetary system and is very able to explain why the Federal Reserve System is stealing us blind. Stealing from our children and grandchilddren. We must take our country back from these thieves! I have monitored 19 months from the British Financial expert on www.worldreports.org and it totally explains why we are in these no-win wars. President Ike warned us of the military industrial complex in his farewell address. Our men and women are giving their lives and being maimed for life. Our constitution says that the military is to protect our country not create empires for these thieves!!
