Topic: Presidential Campaign 2008
Illegal Aliens Can Solve Troop Strength Challenge

McCain has ideas on illegal immigration and the use of the military. None of which address the root causes so here is another proposal for him to consider. Senator McCain should adopt this since it fits best with his ideas...

Ω   There's concern in this country about illegal aliens and whether amnesty should be considered. Of course we know Senator McCain supports amnesty which causes him some grief among the conservative base of the GOP and Independent voters. Also, there is a debate about our troops, the war on terrorism, and the ability to maintain forces in so many parts of the world effectively. We know McCain wants our troops in Iraq for as long as 100 years as well as maintaining the presence in all other 130+ countries we currently have troops stationed.

This creates a strain on troop strength in a time period where recruitment is tight. Among the many plans proposed during the Presidential campaign so far only Ron Paul's tackles the challenges at the root causes so this plan is proposed for any of the other candidates to adopt in direct opposition to his make sense focus on the issues. Although each of the other four remaining candidates may want to adopt it, the proposal is best suited for the concepts and philosophies presented by John McCain so far.

Background:

Amnesty was granted in the mid-80s to roughly 5 million illegal aliens under Ronald Reagan (not his best move) effectively resetting the number in this country to zero. McCain was a foot soldier' for Reagan and supports amnesty once again. The estimated number of illegal aliens in the U.S. is a tough number to grab on to. Estimates range from 12 to 23 million most of the time. That's a big range. To Senator McCain's credit he would deport about 2 million of those here illegally based on their criminal records. For the sake of argument this leaves 15 million, splitting the difference. Without a serious change in domestic policies which create the desire for these people to risk so much in an effort to come here we can look at history and determine if the 15 million are given amnesty we will have roughly 45 million more within two decades.

With our military the recent trend in recruiting has been in decline. There have been rumblings from time-to-time about possibly bringing back the draft. Others think its time to turn to conscripted service requirements to help sustain troop strength levels necessary to meet our current and future needs around the globe. In addition to military personnel there's also a need for civilian support agencies and civilian staff to operate daily military installation requirements.

Proposal:

In an effort to allow illegal aliens a way to come out of the shadows of society those meeting the physical requirements can be offered military service as a path to citizenship. This is not unprecedented. After an honorable oversees service of 4 years the military member and their family can be sworn in as citizens of the United States. If they are not physically fit for active military service civilian positions can be offered as an alternate path. Serving in a civilian position oversees for 6 years will allow the worker and family to obtain citizenship. During their time of service all workers will be considered legal aliens.

Current military and civilian citizens serving oversees will be rotated back to the U.S. and will not be required to serve any further oversees operations. Once all stateside positions are filled any military or civilian displaced by the legal aliens will enter a retraining program. This program will focus on preparing them for a transition to private positions. The retraining program will be voluntary.

In order to insure there are sufficient numbers to meet the increasing global needs of the U.S. military, based on the make sense interventionist policies proven effective this past century, military induction stations will be set up along all current and future border crossing locations. All U.S. companies will no longer be allowed to hire any illegal aliens and no birthright citizenship will be granted. Companies will be encouraged to offer all citizens positions previously determined to be hard to fill by any but those coming here illegally. With the displacement of DOD personnel combined with the down turn in the U.S. economy studies suggest positions previously difficult to fill will become high demand jobs.

Conclusion:

By immediately enacting this proposal a path to citizenship will be available for everyone. No person that has been coaxed to come to this country due to failed U.S. policies will face inhumane deportation. The ability of the U.S. government to intervene in more countries in order to spread freedom and democracy will be greatly enhanced. There will be no slow down in the financial well-being of any corporation currently supporting the military efforts to free the world from tyranny. Terrorists against the U.S. will soon understand the military force of this country will grow to numbers beyond their ability to defeat and the war on terrorism will have an extremely high potential for success within the first two years of implementation.

For those reading this proposal and immediately determining it is unrealistic and somehow cruel or improper must understand it is no more unrealistic, cruel, or improper than our current foreign policy or our current immigration policy. Supporting a never ending interventionist, preemptive strike capability requires a lot of personnel. Never ending conflict that supports homeland security requires sacrifice of both money and life. Having birthright citizenship, welfare, medical, and job opportunities is a cruel temptation driving many to risk their lives in order to come to the U.S. with their families even if that means living in the shadow of society for decades.

If there is to be no real change in our foreign policy, if there is to be no real change to the flaws of our immigration policy then this proposal makes just as much sense as anything else being put before the voters this election year. Change is a buzz word being used like some new aphrodisiac by Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Mike Huckabee and John McCain. We don't need their style of change; we need a restoration of the Federalist Republic. Restore our nation and this proposal is only a fictional storyline. Vote for the change the leading candidates offer, especially those of Senator McCain and this proposal becomes just as sound as the proposals offered up by their campaigns to date. Think about it before you cast your vote.

I have often considered this idea.....However if  John McCain becomes president , the 15 ml. or so "ill-legal" immigrants in this country  won't be enough people to fight all his wars.

This type of policy is only necessary in a war-state. The real problem is our propensity to fight wars every 5-10 years in remote locations and our 130,000+ troops stationed around the world. We need to change the foreign policy, let the UN police the world if they want, and protect OUR land.

I'm suprised more of you Libertarians don't see the danger of this idea.

The goverment's power in it's armed forces is , right now, useless. They -- the military -- will NOT act to confiscate weapons in large areas of America, or put down your peaceful demonstrations. They give the government a great deal of power, but as an all volunteer force, they are the "militia" of the modern day, supremely well armed. If government turns against you, as it stands now, the Military is more likely to fight alongside the people than the government.

But giving illegal aliens the right to be citizens by letting them join the armed forces makes them ... well, alien. They are NOT your neighbors, they do NOT have your values, or your love of America, and they are only loyal to the government that has promised them a place to stay and citizenship to work. The government could very easily turn such a group against the people.

If the aliens made up the bulk of the military, with the full power of the armed forces behind them, no militia force of survivalists in the country could survive a pitched battle with them. I think independant guerilla bands of such militias would win with time, but the cost to the country and the death toll would be horrific.

Can't support this one, sorry.

That's OK, this was put out as a serious proposal to garner support.  It was to show just how poor the proposals before us are, especially those of McCain.  If you can support this then I'd have concerns! ;0)

Gary Wood is a lifetime member of the VFW and served over two decades between active duty, reserves, and civilian service, honorably, thank you.

It WAS NOT meant to be a good idea, it is a stupid idea, as stupid as any amnesty proposal and troop proposal being fed to the voters by John McCain! I would worry about anyone who actually thinks the idea has merit. Perhaps spoof articles don't go well with some readers...geeesh!
