By the time of Super Tuesday ... We were half a million strongby George Dance

This article isn't exactly on topic for the column, but I needed to write something light and cheerful tonight.
I've been getting tired of reading on-line, ever since Super Tuesday, about Ron Paul's "losses" and "disappointing" vote totals. So I decided today to go onto CNN's Election Center 2008 and calculate how many votes Ron Paul had already received in the primaries and caucuses so far.
The total I got wasn't definitive. For one thing, some of the states did not show 100% reported. For another, I couldn't include WV and WY (where CNN officially gives Paul 0 votes each). Adding up what I could though, I got a total of sorts:
As of Feb. 5, 572,884 people had voted for Ron Paul in the GOP primaries and caucuses.
To put that figure in perspective: that's almost 150,000 more votes than Paul received in total in his 1988 Presidential campaign.
Imagine that: despite all the attempts to keep Americans from hearing Ron Paul's message, over half a million Americans embraced it this month. I'd call that a very good start to the campaign.

There is one thing I have learned in my 42 years of life, it is that failure only occurs when one truly gives up. I for one will never give up on Ron Paul and I hope all who read this will dig in their heels and resolve to do the same. Remember when things look the most bleak is when the most change can take place. One other thing, at the WA precinct caucus the Paul campaign took county delegates nearly 2 to 1 to McCain's. Note the GOP doesn't tell you that, they only tell you who won the popularity contest. :-)
There is still hope in terms of delegates that are not being reported. And in LA, for example, no one got 50% therefore those delegates are uncommitted. They can vote for whomever they like. From what I hear, many of them are Ron Paul supporters.
This same trend has been true in other states as well. Don't give up the fight!
Wonderful comments and thank you. Win or lose the nomination, we've already won because we have opened the hearts and minds of over half a MILLION people! That is victory by any measure.
Stay positive, keep waving the Ron Paul banners wherever and whenever you can, tell everyone you know to vote Ron Paul and, to paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, 'never, never, never, never, give in"!! This is the good fight.
