With the track to themselves and the crowded schedule of Super Tuesday behind them, both Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama put on a vigorous campaign in Loisiana.
Senator Clinton campaigned until the day before the vote, and her husband, former President Bill Clinton did his part as well. Former President Clinton made a point to the people of New Orleans that his wife had made an effort to get aid to the city after Hurricane Katrina. IF Senator Clinton is the nominee in the fall it is certain that the point will come up again.
Senator Obama, who is now being portrayed as the candidate of the younger, wealthier and better educated members of the Democratic Party made what may have been a tactical effor in making his final campaign speech at Tulane University, an expensve and selective private institution. It smacks a little of preaching to the choir.
But at the end of the day, the Clinton appeal for gratitude and the possible gaffe by Obama made no difference. Obama won a convincing victory. With 88% of precincts reporting, Obama had 177,352 votes to 119, 372 for Clinton, an eighteen point margin. The five candidates who have withdrawn drew about eight percent of the vote with only John Edwards apparently retaining even a small following, With 10,723 votes
The campaign has a long way to go, probably all the way to the convention with changing outcomes. But right at the moment, Obama appears to have momentum
