Topic: Presidential Campaign 2008
Senator John McCain, A Lamb to the Slaughter

Republicans seem split on their desire to support the Arizona Senator as the party nominee. Why then is he receiving so many endorsements and the apparent silent backing of the Republican National Committee? Here’s one theory...

Upsetting many is the question of whether or not John McCain is a conservative and if he should represent the Republican Party which is known as the conservative party. Many top conservative figures have gone so far as to threaten boycotting McCain if he ultimately wins the party nomination. According to James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, "I am convinced Senator McCain is not a conservative, and in fact has gone out of his way to stick his thumb in the eyes of those who are." Ann Coulter has gone so far as to say she would campaign and vote for Hillary Clinton in protest to a Republican ticket with McCain as the Presidential nominee.

McCain's response came today when he said, ""I do hope that at some point we would just calm down a little bit and see if there's areas we can agree on." Hope is not a bad thing but will it be enough to overcome the bitterness so many feel for him? Some, like radio show host Rush Limbaugh, actually believe he'll tear the Republican Party apart if he wins the nomination. Still others are claiming it is time to put aside party differences in order to elect a President that can take on the important international threats against this country. This side of the argument is convinced the one candidate to be able to do that is John McCain.

With all his squabbling the voices of the Republican National Committee (RNC) have been silent. The blogosphere is filled with sentiments like the one posted on St. Louis's Craigslist Rants and Raves page stating all the reasons McCain did not make sense as the party nominee, "...which makes me think the Republican National Committee is clueless." I don't think the RNC is clueless at all. I believe they are clued in completely to the reality of the situation and are enjoying the rise to delegate dominance Senator McCain is on in the wake of Super Tuesday.

There's a tremendous bitterness with President Bush and the Republican Party in general. The Democrats have effectively laid the blame for all the country's woes at the feet of the current leaders of the Republicans. One key indicator you can be assured is catching the attention of the RNC is the record voter turnout for Democrats in primary after primary. People are mad and it's been easy to point to Bush and his fellow Republicans as the culprits. An example of the rhetoric working to fire up Democrats came in a speech by Hillary Clinton last month while campaigning on Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday. "We have a culture of corruption, we have cronyism, and we have incompetence," she said, "I predict to you that this administration will go down in history as one of the worst that has ever governed our country." The people are buying it, without questioning their own party's responsibility. Whether they're voting Obama or Clinton they are united in their focus to oust the Republican's from the White House.

What better time is there than now to allow John McCain to be the nominee? He's wanted this for a long time. After he lost in 2000 it is now being reported he considered switching to the Democratic Party in 2001. He has sided against his party on key issues. There is no realistic hope for any Republican candidate to win the White House in 2008. By allowing the coronation of John McCain the RNC effectively gives him his chance to prove himself at a moment in history he really has no chance. The RNC is not clueless; they simply have found the best candidate to send out as a sacrificial lamb to the slaughter.
