... and then there were three.
From a debate stage of formerly ten, we are now down to five. Gilmore, Thomson, Tancredo, Keyes (who only appeared in two debates), Hunter - and now Fred Thompson, the overhyped "new Ronald Reagan" himself, have all fallen by the wayside.
The three most likely remaining candidates after the next round of dropouts will be McCain, Romney - and Ron Paul!
If Rudy makes as poor a showing in Florida as he made elsewhere so far, he may drop out. That will leave Romney, McCain, the Huckster, and Ron Paul.
Huckabee has no money. Period. His campaign is asking people to accept salary cuts - and they refuse! Can you imagine Ron Paul in that situation? His people will work for free if they have to, or if they can't then someone will - because tens of thousands already do, voluntarily. Ron didn't even have to ask them. They stepped forward on their own.
Besides, Ron wouldn't have to cut salaries because he doesn't spend money like a drunken sailor in a high-end whorehouse.
McCain's finances don't look so good, either. Yes, he won South Carolina - but how will he compete on Super Tuesday after having spent his entire wad on Florida?
What's more, he is now proven to be the sell-out back-stabber most conservatives already knew him to be. Jerome Corsi at WorldNetDaily published an article showing Juan Hernandez, a former top-level "man for Mexico" in Vicente Fox' administration and PR stooge for the CFR financed "Open Borders" and "Mexico First" crowd is McCain's "Hispanic Outreach Director", an allegedly unpaid but top-level position. Click on his name and watch this video!
When FLoridians find this out, they will toss him out on his head!
So, it's either down to three-way race between Ron, Mitt, and John, or between Ron, Mitt, and Fruity Rudy - if Rudy makes it past Florida.
But it is entirely possible that Fruity will quit after Florida AND that McCain will run out of money. That would leave only Ron and Mitt in the race! Mitt is dumb enough to throw his millions to the wind just get another notch in his belt, so he will likely outlast any others - other then Ron Paul, that is.
Can you imagine a two-way debate between these two contestants? Who is going to back Mitt up with his uniformed but snide comments and his behind-the-hand snickering when he faces Dr. Paul alone on the stage? How will he hold up on economic issues when Ron gets down to the fundamentals and he cannot counter him because he is not allowed to even address these issues? Or on credibility? Or on healthcare, or abortion, or tax cuts, or immigration, or gun control, or - worst of all cases - on the dollar and monetary policy?
Or, let's say McCain gets matching funding and he remains after Romney and Giuliani quit (just for argument's sake, alright?). How can "Mr. Amnesty" stand up to Dr. No on that one in front of grass roots Republican voters?
All Ron Paul has to do to win the nomination is to "show up" so to speak. All he has to do is to hang in there - and his current single-digit to lower double-digit polling numbers (and his opponent's so-far high double-digit numbers) become what they always were:
Meaningless.
As long as there are sufficient other candidates to steal the poll-numbers limelight from Ron Paul, neoconservatives will still feel comforted to some degree - but what if the other candidates all fall off the truck except for Ron Paul and "whoever"? By virtue of his then-status as the ultimate survivor, all of the media spotlight will be on Ron Paul regardless of poll numbers!
This is shaping up to be a most interesting race, indeed...

I am so glad that we have this website that reports the truth that Ron Paul wins, despite the fact that the MSM tells us differently. I also read the onion too. They are just as accurate.
I second the motion of being glad that there is a site out there that actually tells the truth. Despite the fact that there have some negative Ron Paul stories on this site, these have usually actually been true, if not popular among RP supporters. Keep up the good work and the good fight!
The arrogant elitists of the establishment are imprudent to imagine that Ron Paul can't win. We are equally imprudent to imagine that he can't lose. Still, the scenarios you present are very credible and hard to refute.
I thank you for introducing me to the term "Fruity Giuliani" It is, of course, an unconsionable, adhominem attack which I shall use as often as possible going forward because it's fun.
But Fruity's a lightweight. These "top tier" pretty boys are just props for the real power brokers, those sneaky thugs who operate in the shadows like Rupert Murdock and Nick Rockefeller. What do you suppose they're gonna do if Ron Paul wins the nomination? They're not going to give up their financial empires just because of a little plebecite. Things are gonna get mighty bouncy. We live in exciting times.
it really is the game of "last man standing". Huckey is a really nice guy, but he has yet to get hit with his fair tax plan, amnesty, money and he's not what the rnc wants to be the nominee. rudy is officially toast. mitt and john will spend so much time and money slinging mud at each other that voters will really be turned off by it. Look at ice queen and obama in SC., people are really turned off by negative ads this time around. So RP is at a relatively good place right now but I think some of his people gotta to tell him when and how to give out sound bites. He should save his knowledge of the economy and government when there is only one other person on the other side of the debate cause 1) he will get more time to state his reasoning and 2) people are more focused when there are only 2 person on the stage.

I sure hope you're right. But in the end, I think it's just a daydream. McCain isn't going to drop out, even if he doesn't have any money left. He gets all the free ads he needs on FoxNews--not only that, but "news" ads work better then the ad ads that Ron can buy.
Ron is still long shot, by far. I doubt your perfect storm will come about, and note that many of the fatal problems you see for the others are more minor than you think.
None the less, Ron's already done better then anyone would have thought and if--and I hope--I am wrong, Ron has a good chance in the Fall. My hope is Ron v. Hillary with a dash of Nader on the green ticket.
Here's a thought. The dollar still has a long way to drop IMHO. If the dollar crashes before the 5th, Ron might just win after all.
If Ron Paul were to somehow manage to rise from the Phoenix and win the nomination, do you all honestly believe that mainline Republicans would support him? No. You'd see a massive third party movement emerge amongst individuals who support fighting Islamo-Fascism. Do you think these Pro-Defense voters are just going to vanish into thin air?
There is a significant Pro-Military constituency out there, that recognizes the threat that Islamo-Fascism poses to our country. And the Pro-Surrender Ron Paul will never win their votes.
I'd guess you'd see the emergence of a General like Tommy Franks on a 3rd party ticket, who'd end up slaughtering Paul and Hillary/Obama in the general.
Eric, please learn about how the extremists into Islamo-Facism are perceived by Muslims. They want to create a Caliphat with Bin Laden as head for all Islamic countries. Even most of their recruits are against that doctrine. America is just a rallying cry to get recruits. Why? Because America is perceived as the enemy. Why? Why is it that Palestinian kids have a demo against Israel for shooting some schoolgirl in the head at close range end up burning an American flag? Why do they grow up to become terrorists and attack Americans? If you decide someone is your enemy, you better understand their motivation for attacking you.
One flaw in this argument is that it assumes that the debates will allow him to participate. It is very easy to select some arbitrary national polling number, or just decide that post super-Tuesday only the top 2 or top 3 can participate. The Paul campaign should start national television advertising to get his message out faster.

Eric, you keep missing the boat (I wonder if you have ever seen one from close up?)
"Pro-defense" is exactly what Ron stands for. Attacking others preemptively is what he is against. "Surrender" means to give up, to hand over. Pretending to fight terrorists "over there" while leaving our own borders unprotected for them to come in over here is the very definition of surrender. We have nothing to "surrender" in Iraq because Iraq isn't our country. Ron will certainly not "surrender" and US troops or even any equipment to the terrorists in Iraq and elsewhere. He will bring them all over here - so they can protect US! That's called DEFENSE. Why do you think the military overwhelmingly supports Ron Paul? "Pro-military" you are definitely not. You only throw mud and slime at Ron at every opportunity you get - and you are not even very good at it.
"Pro-Defense voters" as others call them will need to have this very important thing in mind.
Regardless of how bad you want this war - it will end with the next president. Now ask yourself if you want a republican or a demorat to end it?
Just look at Obomas crowds all you have to realize is even if what is left of the entire Republican Party came out to vote Oboma will still win.
Unless the remainder of the republicans team up with the libertarians and have a candidate that can pull the independents - the democrats will win. This is why Ron Paul needs to get the nod from the GOP - unless they truly want to toss the country to the dogs.
Um.. do you think there's actually *any chance *whatsoever that one or more of these candidates will drop before super tuesday?

I would be astonished. What is much more likely is that all will stay in, the delegates will be divided almost-equally among mccain, romney, and giualiani, and Dr. Paul (sadly) will continue to get 4th or worse in each primary.
Now: I *dream of a headsup match between RP and anyone. But I know these dreams are wild.

Matt C, Are you even aware of the fact that Ron Paul has finished 2nd in 2 of the last 3 contests, and that he has defeated Ghouliani in all but one of the states so far? He may have even won Louisiana, they can't seem to count the votes down there. Stop being so negative!!! Dr. Paul is on the rise, and if he were getting any decent media coverage, he would probably be winning this thing. People are waking up, it just takes time. Who knows what could happen by November?

I, for one, would love to see this happen. It would mean that for the first time ever, the question of whether "islamo-fill-in-the-blank" is something we should fear as a country (or simply dismiss as an attempt to make us afraid in order to govern us and intimidate us) would actually be publicly debated rather than treated as if the fear were an inevitable truth. That would be a very healthy thing to happen. The only way to truly overcome fears is to face them.
There are some that predict that if Ron Paul isn't stopped with the media blackout, if he makes it far enough to the republican candidate or even elected president, his very life will be in danger. Would be corps risk that? What would be the 'blowback' then?
Sorry Eric, but the very group that believes this war is correct is also the very group that will believe anything the media tells them. It's the same group who consider themselves "Life-Long republicans" instead of actually trying to determine who is best to vote for based on their credentials. If Ron Paul gets the republican nomination there will be no massive third party Pro-War movement because the people who are pro-war....don't care. They'll vote for Ron Paul because it says (R) next to his name on the ballot, never even realizing their voting for someone against their precious fear driven war on Islam.
I have noticed a few things lately about the web articles that are coming out. No one seems to be attacking Ron Paul. I particularly enjoyed berating them for their cheap attempts. Perhaps they are trying a new approach of totally ignoring him? Not even any negative articles oh well.
I don't doubt that Dr. Paul can stay in the race right up till the end, but will he get the votes? So far the results have been very disappointing. As each of the big government war mongers drop out, it looks like Dr Paul is not gaining support.
I do see some value in fewer people in the debates where Dr. Paul gets more air time, but I am not encouraged that more air time will penetrate enough closed minds. It seems he has the wrong message for many of those who consider themselves "Republicans", and who are affected by fear more than logic.
Essentially I see the problem is that the "Republican" voters have rallied around the flag as those in power and the war monger candidates keep holding up boogymen to freighten and control the electorate. Ron Paul is portrayed as a traitor to the gang for pointing out the obvious facts about our empire and the hatred it fosters.
No one will vote for Paul in the end, because we have plenty of black people and mexicans in the army to kill the towell heads holding out in the mideast. Ron Paul is too weak to take the next logical step for the US which is to expand complete coverage over the world with unified banking, language, and law systems. Once we decimate the islamics in their homeland and place our "democracy" there, there will be one government, one people covering the planet. Then we can move into the future. I would gladly pay 75% taxes to have the government control everything in our lives. I hope we can get to that utopian day soon.

Giuliani may withdraw AFTER Super Tuesday, but certainly not before. He will get enough delegates in California and a few other states to encourage him to continue on into the convention. There is no way McCain, Huck or Romney will fold after Super Tuesday, each will get delegates, Huck in Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Bible Belt, Romney & McCain will split the rest, though Ron Paul will get delegates in California, Washington state, Montana, possibly Colorado and Arizona.
I believe all 5 will go to the Convention with varying influence, and no first ballot majority.
At least Ron Paul will not run out of money, because if his supporters ever get wind of his finances running low, they will just drop a few more "money bombs" on him. And if he does get elected, we can quit worrying about those other kind of "bombs" falling. And maybe someday, our children can "tour" Iran on a tour bus, instead of a "tour of duty" in a Humvee.
Im so glad Mr Paul is running for President... All I can say is "Put on your bulletproof vest and RUN PAUL RUN!"

Unfortunately, Floridians did not find this out, and was there a campaign in SC? The radio talkers only mention his name with some attached epithet or snear, and the MSM carefully avoid mentioning him. A few days ago, I saw several other reports of MSM touting a position of another candidate, saying "he's the only one who says he would x", when it was a position Ron Paul has held for at least a couple decades.
Well, if he's crushed, we can still vote for the Libertarian Party candidate.
If you believe Ron Paul is right, don’t let pessimism (your own or anyone else’s) prevent you from voting for him in the primary!! That’s really all it takes for him to win—votes!!!

Great article. Your predictions are starting to come true! I don't think I've read so many political articles in my entire life as I have in the last week or so. I'm searching everywhere for information on Ron Paul and the other candidates.
I thought this was an interesting article for those that what to know who Ron Paul is. Many people just don't "get" him unless they really research the issues. This article echos much of what we all know but there were some additional information that I didn't know. My fiance found it and I showed some people at work and after reading it, they were coverted! woo hooo, one person at a time!
I've already cast My absentee vote and I seriously doubt Ron Paul will win even one of the twenty one states on Super Tuesday. And No I didn't vote for Mitt or Ron, I voted for John McCain.
