This speech was given at the Dallas Martin Luther King Jr. March on Saturday, January 19th 2008 by the DFW Ron Paul Activism Meetup Group which participated in the march.
We are here today to pay homage to Dr. King's vision of personal freedom for all Americans.
Dr. Ron Paul's presidential campaign is a movement that is composed of, organized and led by ordinary Americans. During his thirty year career defending freedom in the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Paul often honored Dr. King's use of non-violent disobedience as an powerful tool for effecting change. Therefore, we naturally look to Dr King and the last time ordinary Americans felt compelled to protest a government that failed to acknowledge their inherent, God given, rights.
We Remember:
Dr King said, "Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers".
Dr Paul says, "The most important element of a free society is the rejection of the initiation of violence."
We Remember:
Dr King said, "We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."
Dr Paul says, "It is dissent from government policies that defines the true patriot and champion of liberty."
I have been saddened that I was not a member of Dr King's generation; I was not able to oppose a damaging war. However, I now see that the timeless struggle for liberty is not yet complete. Dr. King fought against the crimes of Jim Crow, and today, Dr. Paul fights against the travesty of the War on Drugs. The struggle against economic injustice continues today with Dr. Paul's fight against inflation, a tax that eats into the savings and lifestyles of all Americans, but most especially the working poor. In fact, Ron Paul believes everyone should be free to keep the fruits of their labor.
In this day, and for the cause of peace, I urge you to consider the candidacy of Dr. Ron Paul for the president of these United States.
