Since this is still a relatively new website, and since many people have never heard of the original Nolan Chart, I thought it would be appropriate to provide a link to a 30-minute interview of David Nolan about how he created the chart more than 35 years ago and some of the many ways it is used today. You can view the video at Libertarian TV's website.

The interview took place in California in 2004 and was made for local access cable television channels by the Libertarian Alternative, a project of the Libertarian Party of California. It's a very professionally done piece and well worth viewing.

One of the interesting tidbits revealed in the program is that the World's Smallest Political Quiz, which is offered by the Advocates For Self-Government website and uses the Nolan Chart in that quiz, currently gets thousands of people taking the quiz each day. This pattern has been happening for years now, and the number of people taking their quiz is increasing each year. At the time of the interview, Mr. Nolan stated that the quiz had been taken more than two million times. As of today, 9/13/2007, just three years later, the quiz has been taken nearly 10 million times, or more than four times the number that had taken it up until the time of the interview. The quiz has been available on their website since the mid-1990s.

While this website also uses the chart and its own survey to divide columnists into their various philosophical camps, it should be noted that the questions and scoring method of our survey is significantly different from the Advocates' method. You can read more about our use of the chart and you can take our survey yourself.
