Ron Paul has been accused of being Racist - this writer reveals the truth
by Stephen Wood
(libertarian)
Saturday, January 12, 2008

Look at these two photos and decide whether you believe there is an eery similarity between Thomas Jefferson and Don Imus the radio personality who made racist statements against the Rutgers women's basketball team last year.  I find the similarities staggering.

Some in the media would argue that this proves that Thomas Jefferson was a racist.

Thomas JeffersonDon Imus

The measure of a man is not in his facial features, it is in the color of his character. Some in the media have taken a new approach to try and stop Ron Paul and his supporters. They have taken to ignoring the man and his message, which by the way is backed by a 20+ year public record of voting consistently to honor civil rights of all individuals, regardless of ethnic origin, religious heritage or sexual orientation.

When it looked like a good tactic, these same media personalities kept asking Dr. Paul why he was running in the Republican Party when he was clearly a Libertarian. If they knew anything at all about the Libertarian outlook on life, they would realize that Libertarians look at all people equally under the Constitution.

So by definition, he couldn't be racist.  Now on the other hand, it was at the least, poor judgement on Ron Paul's part 20 years ago to allow a newsletter, bearing his name to be published without controlling it's content.

Did he know what was being said in the paper?  We'll never know!  Since this is being brought up during a presidential race, it is fair to bring up what everyone else was saying, lending their name too and doing 20 years ago.

Has anyone made a big deal about Barak Obamas frequent experiences with illegal drug use 20 years ago?  Has anyone found out how the 1000+ convicted felons that Huckabee pardoned are doing in society?  Has anyone interviewed the Fire Departments and Police Departments in New York to see why they hate Rudy so much?

Has anyone been showing the video footage of Mitt Romney just 8 years ago, trying to prove he is not a Republican when debating Ted Kennedy?

If Ron Paul has no chance of winning, why attack him at all?  I don't know what his chances of winning are, given the current media bias against him, but I do know that they are attacking him and I believe I know why.

He is like the father who is lecturing his kids on integrity, honor, abstinence and self-control as his sons are secretly planning to steal some liquor, go get some girls drunk to take advantage of them and they don't like hearing this because they don't want to feel guilty about what they WANT to do.

It is a proven fact that all of the candidates running for the office of the President of the United States, have a history of great accomplishments, mis-steps and bad decisions.  The question you need to ask is which one of them has shown the wisdom, the discipline and courage to do the one thing that cannot be an option for our next President, to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic?

Only one candidate has made this the benchmark of his political career.

That is why Ron Paul has my vote and why he should have yours.

Thank you for the laugh! I needed that this morning.

I should point out that, strictly speaking, Jefferson was a racist, although he was also an enigma. He himself owned slaves and had an intimate relationship with one of them (Sally Hemings), which produced offspring which the Jefferson family denied even existed years afterward. He said he considered blacks "to be as far inferior to the rest of mankind as the mule is to the horse, and as made to carry burthens," according to August John Foster, who visited Monticello in 1807. (source: Thomas Jefferson, An Intimate History, by Fawn M. Brodie, WW Norton & Co Inc, New York, 1974)

On the other hand, he tried to free the slaves with a bill he introduced in the new Virginia legislature in 1799 and another a few years later in Congress under the Articles of Confederation (which failed by one vote). He also freed a handful of his slaves at his death, though the rest of his slaves were not so favored. There is no doubt that he was deeply troubled by the whole issue of slavery. His original draft of the Declaration of Independence (from a document found among Madison's papers) contained the following phrasing which was later stricken by the members of the First Continental Congress:

He has waged cruel War against human Nature itself, violating its most Sacred Right of Life and Liberty in the Persons of a distant People who never offended him, captivating and carrying them into Slavery in another Hemisphere, or to incur miserable Death, in their Transportation thither. This piratical Warfare, the opprobrium of infidel Powers, is the Warfare of the Christian King of Great Britain.

I have really been struggling with these articles that were published and after careful consideration of the facts presented. James Kirchick is absolutely correct in his assessment. RP is a candidate that we would not want in the Whitehouse. The articles do have strong racial overtones and gay hysteria. Ron Paul did not pen them but he might as well have. America cannot tolerate, must not tolerate a President that would stop the war on drugs. Why would any reasonable person want a President to pardon these common criminals? We also must not tolerate a President that would prevent a constitutional amendment defining marriage between a man and a woman and by proxy of the amendment declare gays as criminals. These dregs of our society deserving of the same punishment as those incarcerated on drug related charges. Thank you James Kirchick for your reasoning and logic for bringing these issues out into the open. Well done Kirchick, well done. Your bold vision of America is what we need. I now fully understand what you believe as truth. Racism and gay bashing must continue, it would be a tragic mistake to elect Ron Paul.

How very true your observations are. They put a smile on my face this morning. As a veteran, it's nice to know that honor and courage are not completely lost, and that integrity is still more than just a word to some people. Sometimes, those onry kids need a spanking before they get the point...too bad Ron can't just pull out a paddle on them! HA! But at least he's there to call them out on their behavior, like the wise Elder he truly is. The more people see him and and actually hear him, then get to understand his history...the more votes he will carry. He is the personification of common sense and the rule of constitutional law. Anyone who doesn't vote for the man, should be ashamed to call themselves an American.

I love your closing paragraph. As the Bible teaches (especially in 1 John), it is not the little stumbles along life's path that count, it is the direction toward which you are headed each day of your life. Ron Paul has been unwavering in his walk toward less government and more individual responsibility. The historical map of all other candidates display major changes in direction, some by election to election, others by situation to situation, and some even by debate to debate.

It was a joy to respond to Lew's appeal for funds to print Ron's messages of the past 30 years in a book. They will be a guidebook for the next several generations. And hopefully, if we all continue to work and donate, these messages will be heard from the White House beginning in January, 2009!

I read Kirchick's article and was very disappointed. His short introductions to each of the newsletters sets the reader up as to how they should interpret them. Stong thinkers see through this. It was weak journalism but very strong propaganda. No one has publicly stated that Ron Paul is a racist. No one has come foward to counter Paul's explainations by saying he did knowingly consent to the articles or that he wrote them. Thank God this kind of damnation of a man's character is not allowed in a court of law. How it is tolerated in the public is a clear testament of how that public lacks critical thinking skills.

It is good to get this out of the way, Ron Paul has no other "skeletons in his closet", so once people get past this "20 year old newsletters" thing, the only other thing he needs to worry about in future campaigning is an endorsement from George W. Bush.

As a bonus, the "racist" angle was brought up just before the South Carolina primaries, in case there are some racists in SC that are still trying to figure out who to vote for, they might vote for Ron Paul by mistake.

You didn't really explain the 49 seconds. I know He was a high school state champion sprinter in Pensylvania. Are you talking about the quarter mile?

That would be pretty fly for a white guy!

I don't believe for a second this racists smear has merit, but even if you assumed hypothetically it has,  Minorities (like my wife and kids) would be vastly better off under a President Paul because fidelity to the Bill of Rights is what makes us free, not what we think or feel.

Kirchick's desperate ad hominum attack reveals more about the opposition than the candidate.  Why not attack Paul's voting record? Why not attack his platform on the merits? Why not attack anything he has said in the Congressional reccord?

They can't. They have no ammo left, but you can bet the farm they will keep flogging this dead horse well into the second Paul administration.

Forget Ron Paul, McCain was racist in the SC debate. How come the media is ignoring McCain's racism during the SC debates? John McCain was overtly racist in the SC debate, read it here: McCain's racism in SC debates

To the posters who have decided that Ron Paul is not fit to be president because he would stop the war on drugs; Maybe you should step back and think about who you call criminals. Possession and use of drugs makes criminals becuase this government has criminalized it, but history continues to show that prohibitions do not work and create even more criminal activity. Those who hurt others and/ or property regardless of whether they were high or not are criminals and should be dealt with accordingly, but this War on Drugs is big business and nothing more. I holds together an entire culture of peoplewho profit by running your life. The cops who are busy searching your car and pockets when they should be investigating, buglaries and attempted child abductions or looking for burglars breaking into homes, they profit. The court system and legal system as well, judges, lawyers probation officers, drug counselors and testors. Courthouse staff; cooks, janitors, security guards, prison manufacturers, food and commissary suppliers. Prisoner phone providers, guards, ect ect. It all cost money, not to mention the families who lose their providing members, usually the minority father or parent. It puts the family more at risk to deal drugs and/ or get onthe welfare roles. How can you possibly believe that continuation of fighting WARS against ideologies and beliefs help mend the socail fabric of an totally screwed up socicety. The price is very high for you as well. I'm sure though that you don't have a problem with Vicodin for pain, ambien to sleep or valium/ klonipin for depression? as long as some quack with a white coat and medical license tells you its ok, right? Wake up all of you and look at the most important factors, the economics of all of this. There is NO MONEY to continue all the wars neither her nor abroad and look at one more thing. The neocons keep feeding you this story that the Islamofascists want to kill us simply because we live and breath and because we are not Muslim; Really? Are they killing and bombing the Chinese or the Russians, neither of which are Muslim, but also neither of which are involved in trying to control Middle eastern countries or support their hand picked regimes. Think about that. Its Ron Paul for me, no one else even comes close.

I'm confused here. Are we voting for president or sainthood. People who want an infallible leader need to move to Rome and vote for the Pope. Here in America, all men are created equal and all of us are fallible. Our knowledge, as Dr. Paul says, is imperfect.

Even if Ron Paul missed the boat here, so what. Even Washington chopped down a cherry tree. Personally, I take at face value Paul's explanation that the statements went out under his name but without his knowledge. I do so because I trust him personally and because the statments don't seem congruent with his personality or views.

We should recall that an earlier Republican Presidency was derailed by these inquisitorial means. When they can't get you for what you did, they have some else do it and try to nail you on what did you know and when. Watergate, Iran-Contra gate and now Ron Paul Gates. In every case the political target is blamed for actions of a subordinate and anti American media grab their morsel of slander with the ferocity of a wolf.

You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time. But you can't fool all of the people all of the time.  Let's not be fooled this time.

Dear MSM, There just are not enough news tidbits about Mitt Romney, HIllary Clinton, Barak Obama, Rudy Giulianni, Fred Thompson, John McCain, Mike Huckabee, and John Edwards. I am really interested in hearing about the cantidates points of view, but I hardly ever see any news about them! But…when I do, it's always negative, condemning, or immature, like name calling and belittling. Why don't you cover these cantidates like you cover Ron Paul? I have heard so much about him, I know right where he stands. I know he filters decisions through the Constitution of the United States of America. I know he believes that the war in Iraq was a mistake to start with, that he was right from the beginning by voting against it, and that he wants to bring the troops home now. I know that he wants us all to be able to keep the money we earn, and abolish the IRS. I know that he respects individual liberty and the right to do as one chooses. I know that he fully supports the 2nd ammendment. I know he says we shouldn't be so worried about Iran, that we should trade with them. But what about the other guys? What do they think about the war in Iraq? What do the think about Iran, should we nuke them and be done, or bomb the hell out of all of the civilians? I would like to know who they plan on killing before I vote for them. Please, just tell us cantidate by cantidate how many lives they will take so I can make an informed decision. I already know where Ron Paul stands. Please watch this video from an Iraq war veteran to support the troops. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI0keH8sKHs Thank you! Dan

Devils advocate: Like the name and hope that is you game. First of all you need to visit www.ronpaullibrary.org and read his writings abouot rascism over the last 20 years. If you took the time to read them you would KNOW that these were not written by him. By the way Luntz was the Yale gay and lesbian student writer of the year in 2006, so look at his own motives as well as the "timing" of this. I know that you dont understand the principles of LIBERTY and that is greatly disheartening, so I won't even address the whole drug war but to say that Clinton and Bush II have jailed (at our expense) more AMERICANs for drug possession then ALL VIOLENT CRIMES COMBINED (source the Dept of Justice). You obviuosly have strong views (some would argue misguided) about the subject and absent of being able to sit you down and explain LIBERTY to you and the ilk that the WAR on our own citizens causes. The facts are out there look for yourself. All in all it is glaringly evident to all of us polysyllabic people that you understand neither LIBERTY or the idealogoy that founded this REPUBLIC. Until you UNDERSTAND LIBERTY you will never understand Dr. Paul. "If ye love wealth better than LIBERTY, the tranquility of SERVITUDE than the animated contest of FREEDOM, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands that feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon and may prosperity forget that you were ever our countrymen" Samuel Adams As far as other candidates stand, google the COuncil on Foreign Relations (CFR) in no way a part of the Government. Look at the manifesto (total global domination at the cost of American Soveriegnty) then look at the members: Bill and Hillary Clinton Mitt Romney aw Shucksabee JOHN MCCAIN Fred Thompson Rudy Goolliani Barak Obama John Edwards The only ones left not in the "club" Dr. Ron Paul and Rep Dennis Kucinich, shed any light as to why they get NO media attention. Listen for anyother condidate to reference the US Constitution, that should be a good litmus test.
