The announcement by the Lakotah Freedom Delegation, Dec. 17, was greeted with an instant curiosity by the national, and International community.
As much buzz as the first announcement made, it is possible the newest might cause even more! This announcement by Russell Means, longtime AIM activist involved in the 1973 Pine Ridge Standoff, and member of the Lakotah Freedom Delegation is brand new, so don't be shocked if you haven't heard about it on Faux News.
"The Republic of Lakotah is working to be able to accept those seeking asylum here and expects to be able to do so shortly." Means said.
According to United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, a refugee is:
"a person who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of ... political opinion, is outside the country of their nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail him/herself of the protection of that country."
Those writing for Libertarian publications, may find this definition usefully if things don't go to well for Ron Paul.
"The refugees from the United States seeking asylum in the Republic of Lakotah believe in freedom," Means said, "but the United States, once a country well known for freedom, now fails to provide protections for people wanting to live free. Consequently, many of its people are seeking asylum in the Republic of Lakotah"
This statement seems to be true. The Lakotah Republic forum has a topic entitled, "can Ron Paul supporters immigrate to the Republic."
The US Government seems to be taking this pretty serious to. They are already, attacking the Republic in the bogus, corporate press!
Means finishes his statement with some hopeful words.
"It is interesting to note" Means said, " that, prior to the Republic of Lakotahre asserting its sovereignty, the general area of the Republic of Lakotah, which has recently been governed by the United States and five of its states, has, for many years, suffered from what has been called a brain drain, in which many of the brightest people have been moving elsewhere."Within three weeks of re-asserting its sovereignty, the brain drain is reversing itself; bright people are flocking to the Republic of Lakotah. It appears as though bright people like freedom."

Isn't this wonderful? I found this story around Christmas and have been telling people about it. There is a whole new country within the United States; a free republic!
I am still waiting for one snippet from the MSM on this story. I would think this news would be HUGE and not one word from the talking heads.
Wonder why the media blackout? Maybe because the bright people love freedom? The US fears this? Will they send in the storm troopers as they did at Wounded Knee in the 70's? Do they fear a mass migration of freedom lovers to this area?
I am giving serious consideration to moving there myself. I never thought that I would feel this way, but it seems that living in America now makes me feel ill. When did the United States become the bully of the world bent on threatening all nations?
The debates last night made me queasy. Every candidate other than Paul seemed very anxious to kill, kill, kill. It made me sad.
Thanks for this article. People should know about this.
The United States is still the country favored by refugees from all over the world seeking freedom from oppressive dictatorships and rulers.
The so-called Republic of Lakotah is an imaginary land in the fantasies of an aging Russell Means, who has the ability to attract cameras and press, and has once more used this capacity for another stunt for which he once became famous.
I suggest to all readers of your columns to pick up the book " The American Indian Mafia" (published Dec 13, 2007) to learn more about this individual. As for his authority to speak for anyone else but himself, see Response to Russell Means' Press Release by Lakota Elders and their organization (founded in 1893) the Teton Sioux Nation Treaty Council.
The response underlines the fact that the Lakota people have their representatives to address treaty matters, and that Article 12 of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 contains a specific provision that stipulates that 3/4 of the Lakota adult male vote is necessary to change any aspect of the treaty. This was done in order to protect the land, the people, and the Lakota way of life.
Furthermore, it also states that Russell Means is only one man, without the 3/4 approval of the Lakota adult male population, and that he has no authority to change anything about the treaty. His efforts, however, spokesperson Charmaine White Face concludes, are helpful in as much as they make the world aware that the Lakota people still have an international treaty with the US government.
I am watching from Australia with great interest. Through the indigenous people of America there must be a voice to rise up and tell the truth to the American people and offer them (ironically) protection.
