RE: AIG Bonuses - "Americans are immature twits" - Jim Babka, Downsize DC

One of the founders of Downsize DC today accused Americans of being "immature twits" in the way they have responded to the AIG bonus scandal. Considering the facts, can you disagree with him?

In a newsletter mailed to almost 25,000 members, Downsize DC founder Jim Babka didn't pull any punches today when he described public response to the AIG scandal.Jim Babka, Founder of Downsize DC

As if the title of the newsletter, "Everyone is wrong about the AIG bonuses," wasn't enough, Mr. Babka made this assertion:

"We need to stop getting worked up about symbolic trivia and start getting worked up about REAL ISSUES."

One might wonder aloud what Mr. Babka would consider a "real issue" if the use of taxpayer dollars to fund huge AIG executive bonuses is, by comparison, not one? The background, he went on to explain, is that congress itself explicitly authorized the very bonuses it then went back to deny!

This should make it obvious that Barak Hussein Obama who signed, and that all members of congress who voted for the so-called "stimulus package" had to have known about the bonuses in advance! Either they knew about, and intended bonuses to exist, or they didn't know but voted for or signed anyway! Talk about dereliction of duty!

In response to public outrage, instead of taking responsibility for their own actions, members of congress have engaged in cheap theatrics. Take, for instance, Senator Grassley's call for AIG executives to commit suicide. Did the senate not know that bonuses were placed in the bill by Senator Dodd? Or did congress simply not bother to read the bill? Ken Jacobine of Nolan chart has written eloquently about this in his recent article "It's Washington's Fault."

However according to Babka, we the American public are complicit in this fiasco by virtue of pressuring congress about the wrong issue:

"I'm going to be blunt, because blunt talk is easily understood. The American people need to stop being immature twits. We need to stop getting worked up about symbolic trivia and start getting worked up about REAL ISSUES. Making Congress read the laws they pass is a REAL ISSUE."

You can read all of Mr. Babka's diatribe here at the Downsize DC website, but I have to agree with his core thesis:Make Congress Read the Bills It Passes! We, as Americans, are indeed foolish to rise up and force congress to deal with mere results of congressional irresponsibility. We ought rather to be regularly and overwhelmingly harassing each of our representatives until they fix the fundamental flaws in a system that allows such nonsense to occur!

Have you complained to your "representatives" lately? Are you concentrating on mere symptoms, like the (in comparison to the entire "stimulus" package) relatively trivial issue of AIG bonuses? Or are you ready to strike at the root?

Let's band together and force congress to actually READ the bills they so cheerfully vote for. Don't you agree that, before they cavalierly spend your money, your representatives ought to have at least had the courtesy to have read and understood what they are spending it on, AIG bonuses or otherwise?

Tell your representative and your senators to co-sponsor the "Read The Bills Act" today - Jim Babka's fine organization, Downsize DC, makes it easy for you to contact all three of your congressmen with a few keystrokes. Let's start pressuring congress today to deal with the core issue!

The uses of the words "trivia" and "real issue" can be better served under the words "smokescreen" and "puppetmasters". In comparison to the root of the problem, AIG's bonuses are trivial.

I agree with Babka but in this instance I think the entire $700 billion bailout is a big issue. The bonus issue amounts to less than 1/10 of one percent of that. In a blatantly unconstitutional move government stole $700 billion from the treasury and gave it to the crooked bankers who caused our current financial mess in the first place. That's the big problem. That amounts to $2300 dollars for every man, woman, and child in the country. If the people saw that amount tacked on to their income tax  they'd raise hell about it. But government just adds it to the national debt so people shrug their shoulders and tune in to "Sex in the City". They just don't have a clue.

The American people are dead asleep. And they object when anyone tries to wake them up. It's that lack of understanding and caring that may well bring an end to the Land of the free.

Thanks for the comments.

Of course the bailouts and bonuses are important; Mr. Babka's argument is simply that we need to go directly and repeatedly to the SOURCE of the problem, a system that allows our representatives to pass endless, voluminous legislation with little or no accountability.

It is time for us (all!) to hold their feet to the fire and insist that they MUST read any and every thing, in it's entirety, that they dare to vote for, and take full responsibility for having done so.
