A reader asked questions regarding security and conflict resolution in "The Village". This article is my offer to help explain it all with the reader's question in bold type:
I don't see how force has been removed from the equation. If Guy A and Guy B have a disagreement, but they've both hired different "enforcement" agency, how do they work it out? Even after a lot of negotiation, neither party will compromise?
There's private binding arbitration. If the parties can't agree on a settlement then they can go with a competing arbitration company until they get a settlement both can live with.
If one party decides to stiff the other, their reputation will take a hit and companies in the future would charge them more to deal with them for being dishonest. Likewise their credit rating would take a nosedive to reflect their dishonesty.
Or to add to the scenario, let's say that Guy B chooses to "represent himself" when it comes to all matters regarding his security. How can one deal with him?
You are primarily responsible for your own security. As it currently stands here in the real world outside the 100% voluntary village, no court will even hear a case (even if you are in "protective custody") if you are harmed for lack of a police presence to protect you. Same goes for law enforcement neglect intentional or otherwise.
A neighborhood association, as a condition of moving into an area, would charge dues that would include security, trash pickup & sewage, road maintenence, etc. Neighborhoods would compete for you buying a home in their area, by offering the best deal for your money with their added services.
Problem solved.
If you want to truly look at it objectively then please understand that government doesn't do things that other people can't possibly do voluntarily.
Government is simply people. Along with property, and land which are commonly held, it is not magic. That is a fairy tale you were told in a government run school.
The same goodies and services can still be there, absent force. Private ownership of everything eliminates that initiation of force, inherent in every transaction.
With competition for your services you enjoy, you will avoid long lines, rudeness, and one-size-fits-nobody solutions that come with the state's monopoly. Who would ever want crummy service just because that's what you are used to getting? That makes no sense to me at all.

Dan,
Some people actually believe that “A=A” stuff. They’re usually the same ones who still believe that Santa will bring them that new putter they want, or think that lucky shirt with all the holes and ragged edges they’ve nearly worn out will help them win the lottery. As the certainties of Aristotle have given way to the relativity of Einstein, we should also stick those Ayn Rand convictions that some people cling to like lint from the dryer in the footlocker in the attic where the other old, used up, and outdated objects eventually end up.
Dan obviously has a few things mixed up about people in a system of government like we have in the U.S. He thinks that many people “have such a large stake in the state as a means to keep their bills paid” that he wants to put an end to those “outright moochers and (those who have) cushy jobs at the expense of the taxpayers.”
Dan needs to realize that most people PAY taxes not receive PAYMENTS for their bills in our system of government. Only those who can’t contribute or can only contribute modestly RECEIVE payments. What he calls “freeloaders” and “moochers” are really people who have very little and who need help. None of those “cushy” government jobs he refers to earn more than $500,000/year ~ even the President or the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court ~ yet the private sector is FULL of freeloaders who are paid outrageous amounts to make beer, donuts, guns, and cigarettes! Now THAT’S the kettle calling the pot black!
Dan and his deceased and repeatedly discredited idol (except on this website, of course, but this is where EVERYTHING is turned upside down ~ the Bizarro World of the internet), Ayn Rand, seem to see HELP given to people as “mooching” because they HOARD their help and generosity like Ebeneezer Scrooge hoarded his gold coins. To help people who need help doesn’t make them moochers, it makes those who help generous, giving, and caring people. Those are words that Ayn Rand never knew, and I’m sure that Dan will continue the tradition.
Further, Dan mentions Libertarians “pooling” their money for social improvements ~ schools, hospitals, bridges, roads, jails, full-time police, fire, and teachers, etc. ~ like someone who has never headed up a committee to get people to contribute money. I’d like to see how many people would be eager to kick in their fair share toward a bridge or a road that goes somewhere they don’t drive. Ha! Ha! You’re hallucinating more than Timothy Leary ever did, and you’re probably not even on drugs!
The BIG TALKERS are everywhere. We all know who they are. But, when it comes time to toss that contribution in the collection plate, you’ll find a whole lot of plate thumpers in the pews. I think Dan is one of those, too. Ask him how much he’ll contribute to drilling a well for someone else who can’t afford it. Zilch! Just as we thought, Harlan! Ha! Ha!

They deride you even while their system comes crashing down around their ears. Master C, I will enjoy hearing what you have to say in about a years time. I patiently wait...

So you take a position with which Ayn Rand vehemently disagreed, and some idiot calls it an "Ayn Rand conviction."
Weirdness.

Hey, Danny boy,
I haven't seen any "answers" to MY remarks. Not so easy when the BIG BOYS gather 'round the sandbox is it?

Carl,
Why should I bother, the other readers are pretty much saying what everyone knows to be true.
You still got nothing, Mr. Conrad. Your arguements are easily enough picked apart and discounted.

Dear Danny,
I have burned and charred your ideas like marshmallows over an open fire over and over again, Danny boy. To say that I've "got nothing" means you don't know how bad it looks for you each time I address your glorious musings.
If you saw all the pie on your face, you might wonder if it's really worth the battle to tangle with me. On the other hand, maybe you just like pie.

Yet, Carl you actually didn't burn nor char any of my "ideas" simply because you said that you did. I'm afraid that is a delusion that you are all too happy to keep laboring under.
I once had a roommate that wildly claimed that because she had filled the sink with water and put plates in it, that she had actually washed the dishes. Your inane boast of some superior logic that never seems to materialize is on the same footing with hers.
My ideas of freedom, voluntaryism, and liberty always work. It's been proven time and again. Your notions of socialism, control, and runaway government always fail. You need only examine the contents of the dustbin of history for proof.
You are free to keep fooling yourself and continue to hold up the thieves as saints should you enjoy the ongoing feeling of that vile balm on your mind. I do not require and likewise do not seek the approval of my peers regarding my views.
Of course, I am both pleased as well as grateful when they lend a helpful comment to my writings although I do not ever need someone's kindness to motivate me to create my work.
You, on the other hand, jump up and down like some starving mongrel, desperate for any tiny scrap of attention you can get both for your factually lacking stories and your venomous responses to the articles of other columnists.
It is downright childish, absurd, pathetic and wholly undignified to act as you do in public. I truly hope that you will find what is missing in your life, regain it and someday stand among your people, no matter what your views, and actually have something to bring to the marketplace of ideas.
As it now stands your spot on the food chain is nothing more than you merely attempting to elbow your way into said marketplace through some overblown sense of entitlement on your part.
Rather than rely on the merit of well thought out ideas, you instead choose the low road and scream out for attention as some childish pest would do.
Come back and talk to me when you do the truly adult thing and stop behaving like such a bratty little kid. I will choose to respond (or not) at my leisure. You are most certainly old enough to know better by now so you have no future excuses for your actions.

Danny, boy,
You're such a salty brisket of self-sufficiency and indignant ramblings that I'm sure you're impossible to live with under any circumstances. Maybe you should just put a little dish detergent in the sink and wash those dishes yourself! I'm sure SHE'S glad she's not with you anymore, too.
The "ideas" you talk about having are just DREAMS and WISHES. There is no REALITY in anything you talk about because it's too stern, too radical, and too one-sided. You live in an Ayn Rand delusion that only exists in some netherland that HAS NEVER, WILL NEVER, and CAN NEVER work in reality.
No one MOANS and GROANS about how bad things are on this website more than you do. You are the most DISGRUNTLED, DISCONTENT, UNSATISFIED person I have ever encountered.
Even Eeyore at least knew how GLOOMY he was. Happy MOANINGS, Ebeneezer! Bah, Humbug! The world is just soooooooo unfair!
