Plea for a Nolan Chart Facebook Account

I've already previously suggested this, but did not support why. It's a plea to Walt but feel free to weigh in.

Dear Walt (and everyone),

At this critical juncture in American politics, I'd like to bring up an earlier idea of mine and that is to have The Nolan Chart listed as an open public group on Facebook. On the page perhaps we could list a few top feature articles and have a public post section. From a scientific point of view, it would also be interesting to see if it propagates or just gets a minimal amount of members.

As a young American in the below age bracket, my reasoning is as follows:

  1. Many young Americans, mostly from ages 15-30, but obviously including many even from outside of this range, have Facebook accounts and use it to communicate with their other friends. I, for instance, post my articles on my page and sometimes even send notes and past on my friends' pages the articles I write. Sometimes it manages to start an interesting private conversation.
  2. This age group is a great target because in general they seek answers, and are generally disengaged from politics and government. In my humble opinion (and keeping in mind I was included in this category just about a year ago!), most have not received their political education.  That said, many of course do hold very strong political views.
  3. I could be wrong, but it seems most young people are overwhelmingly pro-Obama for the election. That's fine, but they don't seem to know WHY. They can't defend their views, because what they really desire IS Change.  As I write in my column, they just don't realize Barack's "Change" is no different from Bush or McCain-Palin "Reform." A site where they can go and just view other's opinions very likely may expose them to ideas that they simply just have not heard or have a different side on.
  4. Although the posting part of the page would most likely be taken over by those insane Ron Paul supporters, the message of the Nolan Chart is to encourage activism and political discourse from everywhere, so unlike most groups that side this way or that, we have a chance to combine and grow from the standpoint of having others join the debate and being open and respectful to the views of others.
  5. It is a chance to have a new gateway to propagate all columnist's ideas to a wider audience and increase site readership.  How much?  No idea!  Like I said above, would be interesting to see if it propagates or not.
  6. The time is right.  Many young Americans, usually content with just partying (NOTHING wrong with partying by the way) are realizing that something is not right.  That Fed thingey and Wall Street guys are in trouble.  Amazingly, most are still listening to Bush's advice! even if the key issue of Iraq is widely viewed as an unsuccessful war, and the widely shared opinion is that the man is a simpleton.  Recent events may lead to the end of apathy and a start of fear (unfortunately!) and action.
  7. Facebook does not seem to utilize nearly as many ads and crap as myspace.

Anyone wishing to join up as a Facebook friend of  myself and this column can send me an email requesting this from their private email, link below.

Having offered this idea of course, I could help out. I have no idea how to start a group on facebook, but I bet I could figure it out.

Jake, you've outdone yourself! This article is both helpful and timely.

Young people get pushed around the same as everyone else. Those still unfortunate enough to be put through the mind-numbing public school system have even fewer rights than adults, and they are well aware of it.

Brilliant idea.

With Liberty and best wishes on your endeavor,

Dan -

Umm, actually I want to see if Walt supports this first, but I would help out since its my idea.  We are at a critical juncture for sure, argh, if I can vent for a sec, I just wrote my most important article ever in terms of timeliness on the Senate bailout, but need to wait for approval - the Senate vote surprised me a little, but I am pretty happy I cancelled by vacation to Laos now - I was so sure some important crap was going to go down this week

Sure Jake, I'm in favor. I'd appreciate it if you would do the footwork and find out what we have to do to have such a group on Facebook. (I've got a lot on my plate right now, so any help you can give in this regard would be appreciated!)

Why not do a facebook application that would allow people to take the survey and see where they fall in comparison to their friends?

Making a group on facebook is rather easy and generally only requires you to be familiar with the topic of the group and to have images that concern the group.  Making an application is much more difficult and requires programming knowledge but will offer the user a much more immersive experience.  Not sure what you guys think about that but I figured I'd at least express the idea.

I'll be keeping my eye out for the group.

Jake, go to Laos if you can. I have been there 3 times and am wishing I could hit it again this winter. It is a great place distract yourself from the distractions.
