Big Brother Was Watching, Elliot

Bank Employees turned government agents started the investigation into Eliot Spitzer. Did he believe that Big Brother was also not watching him?

Each time the noose of government control tightens around our necks, we are told as long as we are not doing anything illegal we have nothing to worry about. One would think that one of the highest elected officials in the country, one who made his reputation by prosecuting others, would be well aware that he was also under constant scrutiny.

Yet according to the Associated Press, the investigation was started by those friendly associates at his bank, who noticed Spitzer moving large amounts of money around. What is a large amount of money? $5,000.

Pseudo-goverment agents are indeed everywhere, doing the business of Big Brother, ready to report suspicious behavior. Pharmacies in Georgia must see your ID before you can buy over the counter allergy meds. A log is completed each time you buy. All one really needs to do is look at the public schools and see the scrutiny that students must endure to see what is coming our way. The students are conditioned to accept it, and likely will the rest of their adult lives. They will not have known any other way of existence.

If you live in the New York area, you can only imagine how many transactions at banks are made above that $5,000 trigger. And the next time you make a transaction at the bank for $5,000 or more, be sure that you have your story straight as well. You might very well be next. In fact,it is rather safe to assume you have. After all, you could have been up to something we disaprove of.

It's time to view the nation we live in as one where we are always having to prove our innocence, for we are constantly under the investigative thumb to find us guilty.

Unfortunately for Eliot, he just did not realize how effective Big Brother has become. The irony is he has helped it to become that effective. I would laugh at his predicament, but fear that you are I may be in the same boat before we know it.

The goal of government is to have so many laws that any one of us can be singled out for violating laws and then controlled via threat of arrest. Spitzer should have been able to spend his money however he wanted. But the law was the law.

In an irrational world, that is all that is needed to force us to obey. Welcome to the Future.

Good article.

What you wrote was the first thing I thought of when I heard this story. On C-span Washington Journal this morning the only caller to make this connection between a big brother police state and privacy invasion described himself as a Ron Paul Republican.

The other thing I thought of was how just the week before Spitzer was very involved behind the scenes in getting a bail out for bond insurer AMBAC. Wonder if the "eavesdropping" in an attempt to monitor that activity simply produced the "happy accident" of his predilection for prostitutes.

On a side note, maybe someone can explain to me (without bringing in religion) why prostitution is illegal.

It is fully impossible to explain why prostitution is illegal without bringing religion into the argument. I'm hoping that your question was rhetorical. Prostitution is illegal because of tradition and religion. It is also a disease control issue, but with the medical technology and regulation that we have today, there is no logical reason to keep it so.

Prostitution is not illegal in this country (federal level).  Nevada prostitutes pay fedral taxes.  However, it is illegal at most local levels throughout the country (state and county).  Unfortunately the only reason why prostitution is still illegal in most of the country is because of religion.  This has to change.  But it has to change at the respective local levels since at the federal level it is not a crime.
